About The Place

Buchan is a small country town with a rich pioneering heritage, which has been a tourist destination since 1906 with John Flynn (the then resident minister and later to become known as Flynn of the Inland) was instrumental in having the Buchan Caves Reserve proclaimed.

Located 360km east of Melbourne, north of Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, Buchan is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland to the south, the spectacular and famous Snowy River to the east, the rugged wilderness of the Snowy River and Alpine National Parks to the north and the beautiful Timbara River popular for its trout fishing, to the west.

The name Buchan derives from the aboriginal name for the area of “Bukkan-Mungie”, meaning place of rocks with many holes, eluding to the many caves that dot the area, which have been popular with recreational cavers and organizations for many years.

The area abounds in native wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats, possums and an extraordinary variety of bird life.

Buchan township facilities consist of a roadhouse with petrol and take-away food, a traditional country general store, post office, excellent licensed cafe/restaurant with frequent live music, and a classic country pub. Buchan Music Group plays live in the cafe 3rd Sunday of every month commencing at 3pm.
